Below are some of the most common questions I’m regularly asked about total shoulder replacement. I hope you find these helpful.

How Long Does Shoulder Replacement Surgery Take?

The procedure generally takes anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half.

How Painful Is Total Shoulder Replacement Surgery?

There is certainly some soreness associated with surgery, but there should never be severe pain.

Patients are completely asleep during the operation, and there are multiple things we do to minimize pain after surgery. In fact, for most patients, opioids are typically not needed anymore. So, pain is typically very minimal after shoulder replacement.

How Long Is Recovery From Shoulder Replacement Surgery?

It always depends on how we define recovery. If it is the absence of pain, that can happen very quickly.

When it comes to optimizing function, typically, we see improvements at 6 weeks, 12 weeks, and all the way up to 6 months.

Most patients are back to their day-to-day activities very quickly. Things like athletics and labor-intensive activities may take a few months. Many patients resume sports such as golf or tennis with ease.

Can I Lift Weights After Shoulder Replacement Surgery?

Yes, after a full recovery, I think lifting weights is appropriate.

The regaining of strength after a shoulder replacement can take a little bit of time, but I do allow patients to perform almost any activity they would like.
